No matter who you are or what you do for a living, cutting down on extra expense is something we are all trying to achieve. These 6 super easy tips will do just that, leaving you with more cash in the bank and live a bit greener in the process!

  1. Give that purchase a 30 day waiting period – We all have had this happen…… We see that perfect bag, chair, tool etc. and instantly have that “I need it now” feeling. STOP!  Put the purchase on hold for 30 days.  If you still want it after 30 days then it is worth the wait and what will come out of your wallet.  Often times though we find that the feeling passed just as fast as it came on.
  2. Make a list – We always write out ahead of time what we need at the grocery store. Be strict and only buy off your list.  This prevents the needless impulse grab that can add $20, $40 or even $50 to your bill.
  3. Get together at home with friends – If you are a social butterfly like I am, you know the importance of meeting up with friends on a regular basis. Instead of meeting at a coffee shop, bar or restaurant, try inviting friends over for a coffee, drink or dinner at your home instead.  We actually are able to converse better in a more intimate environment and don’t have to fork out unnecessary dough.
  4. Make do and mend – My grandmother would always use this phrase. As I have gotten older, I have realized that there is a lot of truth behind this statement.  Try fixing a broken zipper, loose button or holey sock first before going out and buying brand new items.  Most of the time mending the object or item is much simpler than we thought and a heck of a lot cheaper.
  5. Turn off lights – Do I sound like your mother yet?! Keeping an extra light on for an extended 30 minutes may not be a big deal, BUT doing it every day for months on end can really add up.  A good rule of thumb is if you aren’t in the room, turn the light off.
  6. Trade with friends or borrow items – This can be anything from books & clothes to video games & gadgets. I like to first check in with friends to see if I can make a trade or borrow an item before going out and buying something new.  Libraries are also a great place to get DVD’s, CD’s, & books.  Also peruse your neighborhood yard sales.  People tend to just want to get rid of stuff fast and don’t care about how much money they get for an item.  You just might find that yoga ball at a fraction of what it would cost brand new.
