Bathmats take a beating. We step on them, they are wet for long periods of time and they generally aren’t cleaned as often or as well as they should be. Below we have put together some tips on the best ways to maintain your bathmat.
- Hang them up in between uses – Bathmats can hold onto quite a bit of moisture so it’s important to hang them up after every use. This will help avoid unwanted odors and mold from appearing.
- Wash Mats at least once a month – It may need to be more than once a month depending on your family size. Washing once a month is generally a good rule of thumb to help keep the mat clean though. Make sure you shake the mat out first before washing.
- Check your mats cleaning label – Most items will have a cleaning label from the manufacturer that indicates the best way to clean your mat. You should always follow these instructions first. If your mat does not have a label continue reading.
- Air dry your mat when possible – Mats with coated or rubber backings do much better and last a lot longer when air dried. Heat from the dryer (even the low settings which are recommended) will break down the rubber backing over time. Having a second mat on hand is helpful for the days that you are drying.
- Wash in warm or cool water – If you find no label present, we suggest washing in warm or cool water. This is to preserve the backing on the rug. Hot water can lift or ruin the plastic on the mat shortening its life.
- Avoid using bleaches – There is nothing better than a crisp, white mat, but we suggest using other stain fighting products to help get stains out and whiten. Bleach can also ruin the rubber backing on bathmats.
