Toasters get used a lot and with use comes your general wear and tear. Just like any other appliance, toasters will last much longer when you take care of them. While you’re making your spring cleaning checklist, add “clean the toaster” to your list and follow these 5 easy steps below.
- Always unplug the toaster before cleaning – As with any electrical appliance, you must always take care in making sure it’s unplugged and safe to handle.
- Brush the metal filaments – With an old soft tooth brush, brush the inside of the toaster making sure to clean off any remaining crumbs on the toasters metal filaments. This will help eliminate that burnt toast smell that you can sometimes get.
- Remove crumb tray & empty – Most toasters have a small tray located under the base to collect crumbs. Once you find the tray, remove it and discard the crumbs. This is a great time to give the tray a little wash with warm soapy water. Let the tray air dry or thoroughly dry the tray with a towel and then insert the tray back into its position.
- Crumbs lodged inside the toaster? – Take the toaster to the kitchen sink and turn the toaster upside down. While holding the toaster in your hands, vigorously shake it dislodging any crumbs or pieces of bread that are stuck inside. Note – you may need to clean out the tray again.
- Clean the outside of the toaster – Dip a rag in a bowl of warm soapy water. Make sure you wring out most of the water. Wipe down the toaster for splatters or spills. If you find that your toaster has melted plastic on it from a bread bag, simply grab some cotton balls and rubbing alcohol. Apply the alcohol to the cotton ball first and then wipe the area with the melted plastic. It should come right up.
Easy right?! Following these 5 steps will ensure that you get the longevity that you want out of your toaster and keep it pretty in the process.
