Save Money, Time & Let Your Creative Side Shine With These 9 Eggcellent Ways To Repurpose Cardboard Egg Containers

I’m a big fan of recycling and reusing items in a variety of ways.  It’s not only awesome for the environment, but it actually saves time, effort and money.  My latest projects have all had to do with cardboard egg cartons.  If you or your family aren’t big egg eaters than this article may not be for you!  If you are, get ready for 9 terrific repurposing ideas that will have all your friends inspired.

  1. Paint palette for kids (or adults) – I actually got this idea from one of my kids art teachers. They work great to keep paint separated and keep mess to a minimum.
  2. Use as packing material – If you’re shipping something fragile or just need to keep items separated. Egg cartons are perfect for adding layers and work great at minimizing bumps and bangs when an item is in transit.
  3. Feed your feathered friends – I like to take an egg carton that’s had its lid removed and thread a heavy string through the cardboard on all four sides. Then I will fill the compartments up with some bird seed and hang it outside. The birds will thank you!
  4. Start seedlings – A lot of veggie seed packets recommend starting the seeds indoors. Egg cartons are a perfect container for this.  Simply fill all the slots half way full of potting soil, lay the seeds in and gently cover and water.
  5. Add cardboard to worm farms – Worms love cardboard and egg cartons are a perfect addition to any worm farm (or compost). Just tear up the cardboard and mix into the container.
  6. Gift Egg Cartons – These days, we all know someone who is raising chickens in their back yard. Give your extra cartons to these folks for their fresh eggs.  Chances are you might get a few eggs in the process.
  7. Use for crafting – A lot of craft projects with kids will ask for egg cartons. I will store a few containers every so often just for these occasions.  Egg carton Halloween spiders are the best!
  8. Organize your knick knacks – Egg containers are a superb addition to any work bench or craft room. You can hold all sorts of little bobbles, beads, bolts or screws.
  9. Holiday light & decoration storage – We like to use egg cartons to wrap our tiny holiday lights around. It helps keep them from getting broken and tangled.  Egg containers also make excellent ornament holders.  Super helpful when holiday storage containers can run you a pretty penny!

These are just a few suggestions, but there are a multitude of uses for these handy containers.  Next time you think about tossing them out, hold onto them instead.  You might just be able to use them for your next project.
