Quarantine Pristine: Cleaning Forgotten Spots in Your House

If like much of the world, you are spending quite a bit more time at home right now, you may have seemingly run out of projects around the house. Sure, you’ve vacuumed the carpets and dusted the bookshelves. But are you missing anything?

There are some tasks you can take on to give your home an extra deep clean– things that you maybe haven’t even considered cleaning before. You’ve probably got some extra time on your hands. Why not give your home an extra cleaning while you can be home to enjoy it– and get the whole family involved?

What are some of the things you can clean, that perhaps you never have had the time to clean before? Here are a few tips for house cleaning to consider adding to your to-do list over the next few weeks.

Dust Your Blinds

When was the last time you gave your blinds some extra attention? They can collect dust, pet hair, and dirt quickly, but you can clean your blinds in a flash if you have the know-how and the right tools.

How do you clean your blinds? You’ll need the following tools:

  • A vacuum cleaner, with the soft brush attachment
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Dish soap
  • Warm water

Fully lower the blinds and close them. Wipe the blades down with a microfiber cloth, starting at the very top and working your way down, then, close the blinds going in the opposite direction, and repeat on the other side. You can also do this with your vacuum cleaner using the soft brush attachment.

If your blinds are extra-dusty or heavily soiled, you can use a damp cloth to wipe them down. Be careful to keep wood blinds from getting too damp, or they’ll warp. You can use soapy water if your blinds have been exposed to grease or have stubborn residue. Then, open the blinds to let them fully dry.

For fabric blinds, you can vacuum them, and spot clean with a damp microfiber cloth and soapy water in any places that need extra attention.

Scrub Your Oven

If you didn’t remember to pick up any oven cleaner the last time you went to the grocery store, you can clean your oven using baking soda and vinegar without having to use that stinky self-cleaning feature.

Empty the oven of all the racks, and make a paste out of baking soda and water– about ½ cup baking soda and around 3 tablespoons of water. Coat your oven in this baking soda paste– avoid all the heating elements. Let this sit overnight, for at least 12 hours.

The next morning, you can wipe out the oven using a damp cloth, spraying vinegar on the remaining baking soda residue. The baking soda and vinegar will foam and help remove stuck-on spots. Wipe everything down with a clean, damp cloth to get everything really shiny.

While you’re at it? Go for your cooktop and your range hood filter too!

Wash the Dishwasher

There are steps you can take to keep your dishwasher looking fresh all the time, but if your dishwasher needs a deep clean, you can take care of it in no time. Just place two cups of distilled white vinegar in a glass measuring cup in the top rack and run the cycle without detergent or dishes.

Vacuum Your Lampshades

Lampshades can quickly accumulate dust, and even if you vacuum them with a high-powered vacuum, they might not ever end up looking dust-free.

Here’s one of those tips for house cleaning you might not have heard before: Once you’ve vacuumed your lampshades, get rid of leftover dust by going over them with a lint roller. You’ll be amazed at the difference it will make! Get the kids involved and have them tackle the lamps throughout your house!

Clean the Gunk Off the Cabinets

Grease and gunk can settle on top of your cabinets, near handles, and on the ridges. Mix one part coconut oil to two parts baking soda, and apply it directly to your cabinets with a cloth or sponge. You can even use an old toothbrush for tiny cracks and crevices. Wipe clean with a fresh cloth, and marvel at the difference!
