Why is a cleaning company with a cleaning blog sharing a blog post about trips and travel today? Well, here at S&G Cleaning, we clean so that you can have more time to do the things you love. This can mean spending more time with family and friends, finally reading that book, trying that new recipe, and so on. It can also mean finally exploring the fun and free things to do in your local area. So, today, we are proud to share eight fun and free things to do in the Somerville, New Jersey area, the main location we serve. We also serve nearby areas including Bedminster, Martinsville, Somerset, Springfield, Westfield, and so on! Check out our list of favorite spots, as well as our website to book a cleaning.
#1 – Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites
Let’s start off with something for our history aficionados! But really, even if history was not your favorite subject at school, the Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites are a site for the whole family to enjoy. The Wallace House served as George Washington’s winter headquarters during part of the Revolutionary War. The curators and tour guides share more fun facts as such to ensure your visit is educational and worthwhile!
#2 – Downtown Somerville
Like any city, downtown is always a unique and eye-opening experience, typically representing the city and its culture very well. Downtown Somerville is no exception. Downtown Somerville is known for its best restaurants, retail stores, valued antiques, and more. There are special events throughout the year, such as sidewalk sales that are kind of like a market or bazaar. There are also parades for different occasions. Downtown Somerville is always a happening place and wonderful to visit once, and again and again if you are a local.
#3 – Gallery on Main
Now, something to please the art connoisseurs, as well as the average eye – Gallery on Main. The Gallery on Main is a specialty and gifts shop, which is also great for browsing. They feature art from around the world, as well as a variety of antiques. Additionally, if you have any old photos or artworks that need to be brought back to life, they also provide restoration services. This is perfect for any prized professions, family heirlooms, or even something you found at the thrift store.
#4 – Colonial Park Gardens
Colonial Park is one of the best picnic spots in town! It is historically significant as it was acquired in 1965, and includes scenic frontage on both historic Delaware and Raritan Canal and the Millstone River. Furthermore, it is a vibrant park filled with fresh flowers, as well as recreational facilities, lawns, ponds, and a nearby golf course. The Rudolf W. Van der Goot Rose Garden section is one of our favorite parts of Colonial Park. It is filled with lots of beautiful roses when they are in season! Pack your picnic lunch and take a day trip to Colonial Park Gardens for some fresh air and grounding time in nature.
#5 – Negri-Napote Native Grassland Preserve
The Negri-Napote Native Grassland Preserve is a great place to learn more about and soak in the nearby wetlands and wildlife. Furthermore, it is great for hiking, sightseeing, and even birdwatching! If you are looking for a new hobby, this is the place for you! Wear your best hiking shoes and bring a pair of binoculars! You can also bring your picnic basket filled with snacks here!

#7 – Summit Farmers Market
Summit Farmers Market is not just your average one. They offer such a vast variety of products from fresh jams and baguettes, to kimchi. There is also fresh produce, including fan favorites like olives and pickles. The Crepes from Brownie Points are something you must try! They are known for their affordable prices and quality products, but just browsing and admiring the unique products is also always fun!
