Downtown Somerville is always a happening place and wonderful to visit once, and again and again if you are a local.

#3 – Gallery on Main

Now, something to please the art connoisseurs, as well as the average eye – Gallery on Main. The Gallery on Main is a specialty and gifts shop, which is also great for browsing. They feature art from around the world, as well as a variety of antiques. Additionally, if you have any old photos or artworks that need to be brought back to life, they also provide restoration services. This is perfect for any prized professions, family heirlooms, or even something you found at the thrift store.

#4 – Colonial Park Gardens

Colonial Park is one of the best picnic spots in town! It is historically significant as it was acquired in 1965, and includes scenic frontage on both historic Delaware and Raritan Canal and the Millstone River. Furthermore, it is a vibrant park filled with fresh flowers, as well as recreational facilities, lawns, ponds, and a nearby golf course. The Rudolf W. Van der Goot Rose Garden section is one of our favorite parts of Colonial Park. It is filled with lots of beautiful roses when they are in season! Pack your picnic lunch and take a day trip to Colonial Park Gardens for some fresh air and grounding time in nature.

#5 – Negri-Napote Native Grassland Preserve

The Negri-Napote Native Grassland Preserve is a great place to learn more about and soak in the nearby wetlands and wildlife. Furthermore, it is great for hiking, sightseeing, and even birdwatching! If you are looking for a new hobby, this is the place for you! Wear your best hiking shoes and bring a pair of binoculars! You can also bring your picnic basket filled with snacks here!

#6 – Duke Farms

Duke Farms, located in Hillsborough, NJ, is another hidden gem for your weekend visitations and close to Somerville, NJ. It is a great place for wildlife viewing, hiking trails, biking, geocaching, and family fun! Check out their website for classes and events, as they offer free passes and several fun events at no or low costs. As they mention on their website: “We’re located in Hillsborough on a 2,740-acre property, where over 1,000 acres are open to the public for self-discovery, outdoor activities, and education and research related to ecological sustainability.” Their value of sustainability emanates throughout and is also very eye-opening!

#7 – Summit Farmers Market

Summit Farmers Market is not just your average one. They offer such a vast variety of products from fresh jams and baguettes, to kimchi. There is also fresh produce, including fan favorites like olives and pickles. The Crepes from Brownie Points are something you must try! They are known for their affordable prices and quality products, but just browsing and admiring the unique products is also always fun!

#8 – Raptor Trust Center

The Raptor Trust Center, located near the Great Swamp National Wildlife refuge, is a great organization and center to support. Additionally, admissions are basically just a small donation. The center is known for rehabilitating wild birds and the conservation of birds of prey. The Raptor Trust not only provides avian rehabilitation for the precious animals but also offers educational programs about wildlife for you and your family to enjoy.
