Moths Making A Mess Of Your Clothes? 4 Ways To Combat Moth Eating Mayhem

There is nothing more maddening than pulling your favorite sweater out of your closet, only to find the front riddled in moth holes. How do moths get in there?! And why wool and cashmere?! After I finally had retired my last sweater and decided I had had enough. I looked into ways of getting rid of those pesky, flying critters and found 4 super easy, effective tips. I am happy to announce that mourning the loss of sweaters (to moth balls) is a thing of the past. Read more.

1. Stay tidy & clean

Keep clothing laundered and closet area clean. Moths are naturally attracted to cashmere, fur, wool and other fabrics made from animal hair but even more so when those items are dirty. Make sure to keep items laundered after each use. You will also want to make sure that you vacuum out the closet on a regular basis and keep it tidy. Also, moths have a harder time finding a spot for their larvae and eggs when your closet is picked up.

2. Avoid bringing moths into your home in the first place

If you enjoy vintage and consignment clothes shopping as much as I do, then you will want to make sure that you wash the item before hanging it up in your closet. Washing items in hot water (if the item can tolerate the hot water) or dry cleaning will ensure that the clothing article is free and clear of any moths. This way you can avoid moths eating your clothes!

3. Purchase traps for moths from your local hardware store

There are many different traps on the market to choose from. Make sure you read all of the directions on how to use the items and what they are made of. These products can help in two ways 1.) Catch the moths and 2.) See if you really do have a problem. There are many different moth species and most aren’t the clothing eating kind.

4. Try a sealed container

If you are looking to go a more natural route, you could simply store all your cashmere and wool items in a sealed plastic container.
